If you’ve spent an extended amount of time in Madrid then you’ve probably heard of Lateral. A tried and true restaurant where you can enjoy traditional and modern Spanish vegetarian bites in a stylish atmosphere and at an affordable price. If Lateral is new to your ears, then you are in for a treat because this polished oldie-but-goodie is fitting for any time of day, company of choice, dietary need, or mood.
Lateral has expanded to six convenient locations throughout the city and this year it celebrates its 20th anniversary! What makes it a local favorite is its sizeable menu that features Spanish classics such as tortilla de patatas, croquetas, and salmorejo as well as modern dishes such as their vegetable lasagne, grilled goat cheese salad, and vegetable tempura with yogurt sauce.
I love this place for many reasons: the food, service, atmosphere, decor, and of course the fact that it has something for everyone! For almost a decade Lateral has done me right by satisfying the needs of meat-eating family and friends visiting from out of town + my own (I’m plant-based). Let’s be honest, it’s hard to find a quality restaurant that can serve the gastronomical needs of both herbivores and carnivores. At Wanderlicious I’m always on the look-out for restaurants that all of us can enjoy together without compromise. Lateral is one of those places.
Lateral’s mix of traditional and worldly options are to be shared and come in pincho, tapa and ración sizes. Its chic yet casual atmosphere is appropriate for all ages and occasions: to “after work” a.k.a happy hour with friends or coworkers, to have a quick bite on your own, or to indulge with someone special.
Metro: Tribunal, Sol/Tirso de Molina/Anton Martin, Ruben Dario, Santiago Bernabeu, Velasquez/Nuñez de Balboa, Arturo Soria
Price: Plant-based pinchos start at 1,60€ and go up to 8,10€ for a ración. Check out their menu.
What to expect: A stylish ambiance that differs at each of their locations. My personal favorite location is Plaza Santa Ana, I love people watching in the summer on their terraza in the square. Some of my favorites plates are the boletus croquetas, vegetable tempura with yogurt sauce, goat cheese with glazed piquillo pepper, and the burrata with pink tomato and truffle oil. Leave room for dessert!
What else?: For those with specific dietary needs (celiac, vegetarian, vegan, allergies) Lateral has a convenient chart where you can scope out the ingredients of each dish making it easy to know what you can eat. Opening hours vary slightly from location to location, but for the most part, they are open from morning to late-late at night.
